This painting was based on plein-air painting experience in Naples in 2008. Not only was it rewarding to paint on Italian soil, but also awe inspiring to visit some of the world's great art collections. I had my first serious look at the Italian branch of late 19th century Impressionism, a group of artists the press dubbed the Macchiaioli in 1862. These artists advocated plein-air painting, and carried into their studio-work a strong sense of light and color, as evidenced in brilliant canvases I observed in collections in Rome and Naples.
