In 2009, my partner and I travelled to Spain & Morocco. Our first stop was Madrid, and we rented an apartment with a large balcony and a view of a nearby 17th century church, its dome emerging from the surrounding tiled rooftops. Before setting off to see canvases by Sorolla and Velazquez at the Prado, early one morning I set up my equipment and painted a small plein-air canvas board of this fantastic view. I've kept that smaller painting as a personal momento and reference, and created this larger canvas, Morning in Madrid, in my studio upon our return.
